Early 1900's Pepper Amati Style Violin

You are bidding on an early 1900's Pepper Amati style violin.  This violin was one of many sold through Pepper in the early 1900's.  Pepper (at that time) sold a large variety of violins.   According to the 1916 Pepper catalog, this instrument was indeed an Amati style, and the ad focused on the quality of aged tonewoods used.  The instrument color was a "handsome dark amber".  The case is the original wooden case.  Label inside says "Amati Model Rudolph Hoffman Leipzig, Made only for J. W. Pepper, Phildelphia, PA".

In 1916 the instrument sold for $11.60.  It was in their student level offerings, this is consistent with the violins available from Montgomery Ward and others at the time.  Their more expensive instruments sold for $30.00-125.00.

According to the literature in my library, this instrument was worth approximately $250.00 in the late 1970's.  None have been auctioned off in recent years by the major auction houses, but it has been appraised at $1000-2000 (full retail), and is certainly a nice collectors item to have.   Reasonable reserve has been set.
